Batik …

What is Batik? Batik is part of an ancient tradition, the word Batik originating from the Javanese.

To make a batik, selected areas of fabric are blocked off with hot wax using a brush or tjanting, and then the fabric is dyed. Parts covered in wax resist the dye and remain the original colour. This process of waxing and dyeing can be repeated to create elaborate and colourful designs. After the final dyeing the wax is removed and the fabric is ready for wearing or showing.

Contemporary batik, while paying much attention to the past, is significantly different from more traditional styles. For example, there may be etching, discharge dyeing, stencils, different tools for waxing and dyeing, wax recipes with different resist values and work with silk, cotton, wool, leather, paper, fabric or even wood ceramic used.

Batik is historically the most expressive and subtle of the resist processes and there is always an opportunity to explore a unique process in a way that is flexible and exciting.
